The Colombian Association of Actuaries hosted Frank Cuypers as a keynote speaker at its VIIIth International Actuarial Symposium in Bogotá, held from November 13 to 16, 2024. During his presentation, Frank explored how pricing, reserving, and solvency models can explicitly account for parameter risk—a topic met with great interest. His trip was generously sponsored by Colpensiones, the Colombian state pension fund, where he gave a half-day workshop on the actuarial use of machine learning.
On Saturday Frank teamed up with Guido Monteverde to deliver an introductory workshop on reinsurance optimization, which attracted around 40 actuaries. On Friday Guido also shared his expertise during a plenary session, presenting on the application of copulas to aggregate dependent risks.
The visit wasn’t all work, though. On Thursday evening, local actuaries José Miguel Valbuena, Mariela Benavides and Laura Caballero took Guido and Frank up to Monserrate, a breathtaking hill towering 500 meters above Bogotá. Note the umbrella: although the city is close to the equator, at an altitude of 2600m the temperatures don't feel tropical, but the rain certainly does!
Before the symposium Frank also ventured beyond the city: he explored the nearby cliffs and woods of Suesca with Alex Sánchez (who, incidentally, did a fantastic job of orchestrating the whole symposium) and discovered Bogotá's charming colonial neighborhood of La Candelaria, guided by her good friend, the art historian Olga
And on Sunday, José Miguel Valbuena and John Rodríguez took him on an unforgettable visit to the stunning salt mine of Nemocón, complete with its mesmerizing reflecting pools of saturated saltwater.
A huge thank-you to everyone who made this trip such a meaningful, enriching and fun experience!
